What is a Mystery Day Trip (MDT)?
A Mystery Day Trip is an exciting, spontaneous travel experience where the destination and itinerary remain a secret until the day of your adventure. Unlike traditional guided tours, which have a fixed itinerary led by a professional guide managing logistics, timing and group activities, Mystery Day Trips puts you in the driver’s seat. You travel in your own car, at your own pace, becoming your own tour guide.
Instead of a pre-planned schedule, you receive a peel-and-reveal card that unveils each stop one-by-one. Peel the first tab to reveal the location and instructions for your stop, complete the activity and then peel the next one to discover where to go next … and so on. This interactive format turns your journey into an engaging, step-by-step discovery tailored to your interests and preferences.
This self-guided style offers ultimate flexibility and the thrill of personal exploration, allowing you to uncover hidden gems and local landmarks without the stress of planning or following a group schedule. What kinds of places will I visit on a typical MDT?
Each Mystery Day Trip features a mix of Ontario’s hidden gems and must-see destinations. Your adventure may include scenic waterfalls, charming small towns, local markets, cozy coffee shops, historic sites, trails, nature parks, artisan bakeries, family-friendly attractions and unique eateries. Some trips include stops at wineries and breweries, with alternative options like ice cream parlors or tea houses for all ages. Every road trip is carefully curated to offer a blend of outdoor experiences, local culture and memorable discoveries so you get a fresh, exciting day trip every time.
How do I purchase my MDT?
Browse our exciting collection of Mystery Day Trips and select one (or more!) that ignites your sense of adventure. Use our easy website filters to fine-tune your search by location, interests and travel preferences to find your perfect surprise day trip.
Once checkout is completed, your Mystery Day Trip package will arrive at your postal address within 10 days. Your unique peel-and-reveal card is everything you need to start your adventure.
How long will it take me to complete my MDT?
Our Mystery Day Trips are designed to be full-day self-guided road trip adventures, typically lasting about 6 to 8 hours from your first stop, not counting your drive to the starting location or your return home from the last stop. Each of the six stops on your trips has Suggested Time to spend, but you are the boss! It’s up to you how much time you spend exploring, grabbing photos and soaking up every amazing moment.
When you factor in your travel time to and from the route, it’s truly a full-day adventure. So, if you snooze on departure time, don’t blame us when your adventure turns into a moonlit stroll! The number one rule? Have fun!
Where will my MDT take me and how do I know the best time to go?
The magic of a Mystery Day Trip is the surprise, but we make sure you have the info you need to plan confidently!
When browsing for MDTs on our website, each trip has details indicating the general area or region where your adventure takes place. We also highlight the best times of year and best days of the week (see “When to Go”) to enjoy that specific trip. These recommendations help you make the most of your day ensuring attractions and local gems are open and ready to explore. You can also find this information on the front of each Mystery Day Trip peel-to-reveal card.
With this information you can choose the adventure that fits your schedule and your ideal travel season, while still enjoying the excitement of a secret destination!
How do I prepare for my MDT and what should I bring?
To get ready for your Mystery Day Trip, start by choosing your departure day based on the details shown on the front of your peel-to-reveal card. Before you hit the road, scan the QR code on the back of the card to check for any last-minute updates to your itinerary.
Make sure to gather the “Extra Things to Bring” listed on your trip card, as each adventure has specific recommendations tailored to the route. Common essentials include comfortable shoes, a fully charged phone for navigation and photos, water, snacks, your favourite tunes and a great sense of adventure! Depending on your trip, you might also want to pack sunscreen, bug spray, binoculars or other handy items.

Are your MDTs family friendly, accessible and pet friendly?
Our Mystery Day Trips are made for everyone, including families! Even if your route features a winery or brewery, there’s usually something fun for the kids too. When wineries or breweries are on the route, our itineraries often feature alternative stops like cozy coffee shops or ice cream parlours.
For those with accessibility needs, we offer select road trips that are stroller and wheelchair accessible, perfect for guests with mobility challenges. If any stop along a route isn't accessible, we’ll mark the whole trip as inaccessible to ensure clarity and safety.
If you’re thinking of bringing your furry friend, keep in mind that while some trips are dog-friendly, it’ll likely be all outdoor stops as dogs are typically not permitted inside restaurants or shops.

Are there any additional costs for a MDT beyond the purchase price?
When planning your Mystery Day Trip, it's good to know that the adventure itself is budget friendly, but there are a few extra costs to consider. Meals, snacks, gas and parking fees are not included in your trip package and will be your responsibility. While most recommended stops are free to visit, if an attraction or activity does have an entrance fee, we’ll always let you know in advance. The priceless road trip memories are all yours to keep.
Can I extend my MDT into a weekend getaway?
Although our Mystery Day Trips are designed as one-day road trips, you have the option to extend your adventure into a relaxing overnight or weekend getaway. Simply spend extra time at each stop to explore more deeply and savor the local surroundings.
Alternatively, you can book a second Mystery Day Trip in the same region or a nearby area. Each of our trips features unique routes and destinations. None of the stops overlap, unless it’s to explore a location from a completely different perspective, ensuring your extended adventure stays fresh and full of surprises.
This flexibility lets you create a personalized weekend getaway filled with discovery, relaxation and plenty of unexpected delights on the road.
What is the activity level for MDTs?
Most Mystery Day Trips feature easy to moderate walking with occasional short hikes or strolls. You choose your own pace. The website allows you to filter on activity levels. The activity level is also indicated on the front of each trip for your convenience.
How can I give a MDT as a gift to family or friends, and what are my gifting options?

Physical trip packages are delivered within 10 days.
THEY CHOOSE – a digital eGift Card is a perfect alternative so they can pick their own mystery adventure. eGift Cards are sent instantly by e-mail to either you, or direct to them. With this option you can write a personalized message.

Do MDTs expire or have a time limit?
Mystery Day Trips do not expire, so you can enjoy your road trip whenever you’re ready. However, because local attractions and businesses occasionally change or close, we recommend you complete your MDT within six (6) months of purchase for the best experience. If you're planning your adventure after that time frame, be sure to check the QR code on your trip card the morning of your journey for any important updates or changes. This helps ensure every stop and activity along your route is current and open, making your self-guided day trip as smooth and memorable as possible.
When are new MDTs launched, and how can I be first to know about new trips?
New Mystery Day Trips are released throughout the year, with extra adventures launching during peak travel seasons and holidays to keep your Ontario road trip experiences fresh and exciting. What if I didn’t enjoy my MDT? Can I get a refund?
We’re sorry your adventure didn’t meet expectations! As outlined in our Terms of Service, refunds are available only if something essential to your trip was missing or incomplete. However, your feedback is very important to us. Please get in touch at info@mysterydaytrips.com to let us know what went wrong. This helps us improve future road trip experiences and continue curating memorable journeys for all our travellers.
